　観光庁が2025年5月に発表した「令和7年度観光白書」によれば、2024年に日本を訪問した外国人旅行者数は3,687万人と、コロナ前のピークだった2019年の3,188万人を15.6％上回り過去最高となった。国別にみると、韓国882万人、中国698万人、台湾604万人と近隣東アジア諸国からが過半を占めるが、4位の米国272万人をはじめ欧米諸国からの訪問者も増えている。欧米からは個人や家族旅行が中心であるが、出張や学会、コンベンション等の前後で観光を楽しむ者も多く、アジアからの訪問者に比べ宿泊日数が長く複数の観光地を周遊するようだ。

　2023年度アカデミー賞作品賞監督賞など7賞を受賞した話題作『オッペンハイマー』が、2024年3月に入りわが国でも公開された。第2次世界大戦中、米国の命運をかけた原爆開発プロジェクトを指揮した物理学者オッペンハイマーの複雑な性格とその半生を取り上げ、科学者としての開発の成功と、その結果多くの無辜の人々を殺戮する結果との葛藤の苦悩が描かれている。核開発競争はその後の冷戦を経て、国際的な核不拡散の封じ込め政策がとられることになる。根源的な科学技術の進歩にはリスクがつきものであり、それを規制やルールで封じ込め管理することで文明は発達してきた。

　フィナンシャルタイムズ紙が、毎年選ぶ権威あるベストビジネスブック賞も19回を数える。2022年まではマッキンゼー社が本賞のパートナーとなっていたが、23年からはシュローダー社がパートナーとなり、日本経済新聞社が後援している。本賞の選考委員会は、毎年8月頃までに15冊前後の候補作を選び、9月にこれを6冊までのショートリストに絞り込む。この中から12月初旬に最終1冊の大賞が選ばれる。本賞の候補作は、経済、経営、金融等の幅広いビジネス関連の分野で影響が大きく興味深い本が選ばれており、私もこれまでこの賞の大賞受賞作には注目し、CFO FORUM書評欄でも取り上げ紹介してきた。

　その中で、洋書ではコロンビア大学アダム・トゥーズ教授の新刊が、数少ない経済面からのコロナ禍の考察になっていて参考になる。日本語では野村総合研究所の調査をまとめた小冊子が、コロナ後の日本の経済改革の方向を示している。

　高等教育機関の質は国の将来を導く重要な指標である。グローバル化が進む中で日本の大学はシンガポールや香港だけでなく、中国の大学と比べても大きく後れを取ってしまった。定評ある英国の教育誌THE（Times Higher Education）アジア大学ランキング上位20校を見ると、日本の大学は2013年には1位の東京大学をはじめ、京都、東京工業、東北、大阪の5大学がランク入りしていたのだが、2021年には軒並みランクを落として6位の東京大学と10位の京都大学の2校だけになっている。これに対して2013年に4位の北京大学をはじめ3校がランク入りしていた中国は、2021年にはランクを上げ、1位の清華大学、2位の北京大学をはじめ7校がランク入りしている（表参照）。

　OECD統計で日本と韓国の一人当たりGDPを比較すると、1980年に日本22,120ドル対韓国5,491ドルと4倍の差があったものが、2000年には36,169ドル対22,418ドルに差が縮小し、最新の2019年では42,226ドル対41,504ドルと僅差になり、日本が韓国に抜かれるのも時間の問題となっている。＊

　THE（Times Higher Education）の2021年の世界大学ランキングを見ると、200位内に入る日本の大学は東大と京大の2校だけに対して、韓国は7校がランク入りしている。

　かつてソニーはサムスン電子が目標とする会社であったが、Forbes社の世界企業ランキング2020では、サムスンが16位に対し、ソニーは56位とその地位は逆転し差は大きく開いている。

　世界ではまだ新型コロナの感染流行が収まらないこの時期に、社会科学の巨人ケインズとウェーバーの伝記が日米で同時に出版されているのは、偶然とはいえ何か意味があるのではないかと思い、この3冊を紹介することにした。

　ケインズ（1883-1946）は病弱であったが、スペイン風邪と二つの大戦を生き延びた。現在の新型コロナによる世界経済の大幅な落ち込みに対し、恐慌に陥るのを防ぐために各国政府はケインズ流のこれまでに見られないほどの赤字財政出動を行っている。発売後すぐにケインズ自伝がニューヨーク・タイムズのビジネス書ベストセラーになっているのは、ケインズの現代的意味と影響が非常に大きいことを示している。

　世界の企業にとり女子の登用と活躍推進は経営の大きなテーマとなっている。昨年12月4日に発表された2019年度FT and McKinsey Business Book of the Year Awardは、働く場での女性差別を、女性の実態を示さない様々なデータのバイアスで明らかにした“Invisible Women”に贈られた。本書はほかにもいくつかの賞を得ており、話題になっているようなので紹介したい。

　著者は39歳の英国のジャーナリストで有名なフェミニスト活動家である。本書では、英米だけではなく世界中の、主として働く場での男女格差に関するデータを400ページ以上にわたって詳細に検討し、人類の歴史は男性標準の歴史であり、人類の半分を占める女性は標準から外れた存在として様々なデータから除外されてきており、ビッグデータの時代に入ってもデータは男性中心になっていることを明らかにしている。

　ゴーン事件を扱う東京地検特捜部1とウォール街の金融犯罪を扱うニューヨーク州南部地区連邦検事局2（United States Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York）は、大きな経済事件を摘発することで我々にもなじみがある。しかし、我々は日米の検察組織の違いについて知らないことが多く、ましてやそこで働くエリート検事たちの思考や行動については、テレビドラマやマスコミの情報からうかがい知るのみだ。最近になって各組織のトップを務めた検事の回顧録が日米で相次いで出版された。これを読むと、日本の特捜部が犯罪の捜査および公判維持の双方に重点を置くのに対し、米国の連邦検事は公判活動に重点を置いているという違いがあるが、正義を追求する検事たちの思考や行動には共通点も多いことが分かる。
